"Andrea Doria" - Bell Recovery

In June of 2010, 2 divers from New Jersey recovered a ship's bell from the sunken Italian Liner "Andrea Doria". The bell is believed to have been from an area located just above the bridge.

The  Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish Liner "Stockholm" on the evening of July  25, 2010.

The Doria, bound for New York City , was traveling in dense fog when the collision occurred 60 miles south of Nantucket.

While over 1,600 passengers and crew were rescued; 46 people died as a result of the collision. The Andrea Doria remained afloat until morning when it eventually capsized and sank in 240 feet of water.

Over the years, divers have come from all over the world to explore the wreck in search of the many artifacts its still contains.  Since that time, 15 divers have died while exploring the site.

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview the 2 divers that recovered the bell.

It was part of a story the news station I freelance for was doing for the anniversary of the sinking. Included was mention of a local Trenton business man that had plans to salvage the Andrea Doria in whole to refit and sell to another ship line.

The story aired on Monday evening, July 26, 2010 - the actual date the ship sank.
